What does fly-tipping actually cost you in the UK?
Hiring a £30 'man with a van' on Facebook can leave you with a £400 fine — even if you didn't dump the rubbish yourself. Here's why.
The legal bit Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, householders have a "duty of care" to make sure their waste is handled by a properly licensed carrier.
If your rubbish ends up dumped on a country lane, the council can trace it back to you — and you can be fined, not just the person who actually tipped it.
How much can you be fined? - **Fixed penalty notice**: typically £200–£400 - **Magistrates' court fine**: up to £50,000 - **Larger fly-tips**: unlimited fine + up to 12 months in prison
Even if the fine lands on the man-with-a-van, councils can issue a £600 fixed penalty to the householder for failing the duty of care.
How to check a carrier is legit 1. Ask for their **Waste Carrier Licence Number** (starts with CBDU or CBDL). 2. Cross-check it on the [Environment Agency public register](https://environment.data.gov.uk/public-register/view/search-waste-carriers-brokers). 3. Ask for a **Waste Transfer Note** on collection — every legitimate carrier provides one.
DH Waste Management is Environment Agency licensed and provides waste transfer notes for every job. No risk, no surprises.
